An Apple (or more) a Day

When we got home from the zoo we found several bushels of big Golden Delicious apples waiting for us from the neighbors. We also went to the house down the road where we found two trees - one Red Delicious, and Golden Delicious - LOADED with apples and waiting for someone to take advantage them. So, the next night we went down again and filled the wagon with apples!

Marcus and Brandon got up in the basket to get some of the apples at the top...

but for the rest of the apples, Brandon just shook the tree and then we picked them off the ground.

These are only the cider apples
Early Monday morning (a little too early if you ask me) we started washing and cutting the apples.

Jared washed all the apples for us

We actually got all the apples cut up before Dad left for work and before Grandpa and Grandma even arrived! We cooked the apples in big roasters, and then started blending and filling jars.

Grandpa and Grandma came later in the morning and were a big help for the rest of the day!

We finished all the apples for sauce just in time to head over to the neighbors for making cider!

Here they are - 120 quarts to be exact

Our family had never made cider before, so it was really exciting to see how everything worked! Mom says its just exactly the way she always did it with her family growing up. She was so happy to get to do it again.

By the time we had finished 21 gallons of cider, we were tired and hungry and ready for supper! Thank goodness for Grandma who washed all our applesauce dishes and got supper ready while we made the cider!

It was a fun day and a great job done :) Thanks, neighbors, for the apples and for helping us with cider, and thanks Grandpa and Grandma for coming to help us! Before long it'll be time for another big apple day, but until then, we'll be drinking cider and eating applesauce :) -Faith
