Down on the Farm -- Summer's End

Shout for joy!! The 2014 garden season is completely over with! Ahhh.... it feels so wonderful to have another season behind us. It was a good summer, but very crazy and stressful as we expanded our program, and then had a flooded basement in the middle of it. I think the crops that did the best were watermelons, peppers (lunchbox peppers were a hit!), cauliflower and broccoli, and pumpkins/squash. We grew spaghetti squash this year which most of us have really enjoyed! The lemon cucumbers were not a favorite, and our honey dew and cantaloupe kind-of flopped.  But all in all, we were blessed this summer with showers of blessings (and vegetables! :)).

We're grateful to a family friend who brought out a tiller that he pulled behind his tractor, and tilled all of the gardens in just one evening - the very last day of September :). They look so nice now - almost nice enough to make us want to begin another season right away! Ha, Just kidding...

Our fall crops did really well this year! Lot of pumpkins, gourds, Jared's Indian corn, and squash. We love fall!

Our seedless watermelons were absolutely delicious this year! The first one we brought in was huge, and by far beat all of the watermelons we had gotten from the store this summer - but maybe that's just because we grew it :). We sold lots of them, and still have lots!

Our last farmers market was September 10th and the baskets ended on the 18th. Oh, it is so good to be done!

With the end of the garden, comes the start of school. Actually we started Aug. 18th which meant a crazy month doing garden and school. So far this school year has been good, I would say anyway!

So now that the gardens are done, and all we have to focus on is school and everything else that a homeschool family does, we have begun a new project! After all, we wouldn't want to stay sitting still for long :). So stay tuned, and I'll explain more sometime soon! -Faith
