Tuesday, October 4th:
We followed the previously established morning routine before hitting the city...
All our family vacations usually follow the same sort of regime as far as food goes. We usually try to prepare as many of our meals as possible over eating out because it's cheaper and more nutritious that way :). So, we plan out our meals ahead of time, and then for this trip, we were each given a day to prepare breakfast and supper for the family. We would pack up a few snacks in the backpack for during the day in the city and otherwise eat hearty at breakfast and supper :). The system worked really well this year again, and amazingly, out of the approximately 30 meals we had together on this trip, we ate out for only 4 of them counting traveling. Not bad! But, I'm getting ahead of myself... back to Tuesday.
We had a tour of the Capitol scheduled at 11am and with the handy metro at our disposal, we made it just in time.
this picture makes it look like a rather gloomy day, but it really wasn't!
We were thankful for our tour guide, Aaron, and for a scheduled tour so we could easily avoid all the long lines of waiting visitors :). However, we weren't able to avoid the security in order to get into the House gallery... gracious! I believe we went through security four times before actually making it to the House!
the beautiful rotunda!
all of us in our representative's office... unfortunately, we were unable to meet him as Congress was not in session so he was not in town.
We spent some time Tuesday afternoon at the Supreme Court building and listened to some lectures there. A few of us were slightly interested in listening in for a few minutes to the Oral Argument earlier that morning, but the long line scared us off... we'll save that for the next trip, I guess!
We ended up heading back to our cottage a little bit earlier in the afternoon this day to save us a little more time for a nice supper and more mini golf, etc. Thanks to Jesus for another great day!
Wednesday, October 5th:
Another day of much the same. There is just so much to see in this city!!
one of the many escalator rides. this obviously wasn't during rush hour...
Wednesday morning we had tickets for tours at Ford Theater were Lincoln was shot, and the Peterson House across the road where he breathed his last. It was another interesting tour!
We were super intrigued by this book tour illustrating all of the books ever written about Lincoln. That's a lot of books!!
After Ford Theater, and a little snack, we were on to the White House! We spent time first at the White House Visitor center and enjoyed the virtual tour there since we weren't able to get tickets for inside the White House. Then we went as close up as we could to get a good look :).
makes me wonder what is really going on in there on a given day!
the other side...
Wednesday afternoon we spent a couple hours at the National History Museum, especially enjoying the Presidential, First Lady, and Price of Freedom exhibits.
one of Lincoln's top hats!
Lastly, we stopped in at the National Archives (which meant yet another round of security!) to see the actual Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights. By this time, we were all pretty well tuckered out, so we took the metro back and enjoyed an evening of more of the same.
The trip just continued flying by so fast! Stay tuned... there is yet more to see :). -Faith
